Together with employees of the Municipality of Amsterdam I have visited the Port of Amsterdam. First a presentation of the Port of Amsterdam by Andrew Walsh and Marc Engelsma. Then a cruise of two hours with Captain Jan de Jong at the luxurious MS Havenbeheer. Jan Blom explained all the interesting aspects of the Port of Amsterdam.Read More
During Sail Den Helder 2013 nineteen historic foreign Tall Ships are anchored, awaiting the Reversed Fleet Review with King Willem Alexander. Ceremonial greetings are offered by ‘Juan Sebastian de Elcano’, the Spanish sail training ship, which belongs to the Royal Spanish Navy. With 35 gunshots she is saluting the King of the Netherlands, also on behalf of all the other ships at anchor.
This picture will be published in the book ‘Sail Den Helder 2013’. On September 30th 2013 the book will be presented to the sponsors of Sail Den Helder at the Royal Navy Club in Den Helder.Read More
After departure the passengers ship ‘Colombus 2’ was accompanied by a vessel of the Port of Amsterdam. The Port of Amsterdam takes care of the safe passage of the passengers ship to the Noordzeekanaal. The Port of Amsterdam 5 brings a special salute to the pilot because of his last working day.
Yesterday I made a photo shoot of pilot Louis Oosterhuis at his last working day before retiring. It was on board of the passengers ship ‘Columbus 2’, length 180 meters and width 40 meters. The ship sailed from the Passengers Terminal in Amsterdam via the Noordzeekanaal and the locks of IJmuiden to the North Sea. We were heartly welcomed by the captain and his crew. Just after we started the last voyage we passed on starboard the EYE Filminstitute Netherlands and on port side the new Institute for Justice.Read More
At the other side of the Firth of Forth at North Queensferry we slept in a Bed & Breakfast right under the Forth Bridge. Every time when a train passed the Forth Bridge our beds were shaking. I was wondering how the bridge would look like at night. I had to wait a long time, but it was amazing. It looked like the bridge was on fire.Read More
During our visit in Scotland to the association of Forth Pilots we also passed the impressive Forth Bridge. The Forth Bridge is a railway bridge over the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland. The bridge connects Scotlands capital city Edinburgh with Fife at North Queensferry. The bridge is, even today, regarded as an engineering marvel. It is 2.5 kilometres in length, and the double track is elevated 46 metres above the water level at high tide. The bridge was begun in 1883, took 7 years to complete, cost the lives of 98 men and nearly 58,000 tonnes of metal. I have never seen such an impressive bridge before.
During Sail Den Helder 2013 I sailed on the tall ship ‘Sedov’ to the anchorage on the Rede van Texel. There all the tall ships assembled for the Fleet Review on Thursday 20th June, the first day of Sail Den Helder 2013. It was the third time I sailed with the ‘Sedov’, see my post http://www.mirjam-terpstra.com/?p=2056. It is one of my favorite tall ships. It was beautiful to see her sailing towards me.
During Sail Den Helder 2013 the tall ship Cuauhtémoc will also be present. The training vessel of the Mexican Navy is 90 meters long and 12 meters wide. The home of the tall ship is Acapulco and the ship was build by the Naval Shipyards of Bilbao, Spain in 1982. At Sail Den Helder 2008 I sailed with the tall ship Cuauhtémoc during the impressive Parade of Sail on the Marsdiep. See my post: Pilotage Tall Ship ‘Cuauhtémoc’ in Den Helder. The Parade was conducted by Prince Maurits at the Dutch Navy vessel Hr. Ms. de Ruyter.

This unique event will take place in the port of Den Helder of The Netherlands from 20 – 23 of June 2013.This year the event coincides with the Navy Days because of the celebration of 525 years of the Dutch Royal Navy. Because it was not possible to photograph the entire pilotage in Gdansk we were invited by Pilot Jakub Sczcerbinski of the Gdansk Pilot Organization to visit the port of Gdansk with the pilot vessel. The port of Gdansk is located in north central Poland Moltawa at the mouth of the river on the southern shores of Gdansk Bay off the Baltic Sea. The Port of Gdansk houses two port areas. Nowy Port (New Port) is a major industrial center and Port Polocny (North Port). At the pilot vessel we had a beautiful view of the harbor and the old city of Gdansk, as the Old Crane Gate (Zuraw). Some of the houses resemble the facades in Amsterdam. It is remarkable to see the old cranes and the great contrast between old and new buildings.Read More
