Pilots of Gdynia

In Gdynia we had a warm welcome by Capt. Ryszard Wrobel, director of the Gdynia Pilot Organization, officially called Przedsiebiorstwo Uslug Morskich ‘Unipil’. We first got a tour through the pilot station. He had arranged that I could sail with pilot Kryzysztof Knybas with the cargo ship ‘Wichita Belle’, length 172 m and breadth 26 m With the pilot tender we were brought to the cargo ship. The pilot trip was a short trip but interesting and started with a 180 degrees turn in the port of Gdynia. We followed the buoys to the Baltic sea. The area with the old cranes was very impressive. Before we returned to the pilot station we were invited to visit the port of Gdynia. More pictures of Pilots of Gdynia

Pilots of Gdansk.

In Gdansk we were warmly welcomed by Pilot Jakub Sczcerbinski of the Gdansk Pilot Organization, officially called Przedsiebiorstwo Uslug Morskich ‘Gdansk-Pilot’. We first got a tour through the pilot station and then we followed by pilot tender at a distance the piloting of the chemical tanker ‘Copernicus’, length 74 m and breadth 12 m. The chemical tanker sailed from Gdansk to the Baltic sea. Unfortunately it was not possible to photograph the entire pilotage. Instead we were invited to visit the port of Gdansk with the pilot vessel. The port was very impressive. See for more pictures Pilots of Gdansk

Pilots of Szczecin.

In Szczecin we had a warm welcome by Capt. Janusz Majewski, director and chief pilot of the Szczecin Pilot. He had arranged that I could sail with pilot Capt. Krzysztof Lewinski with the chemical tanker ‘Theodora’, length 117 m and breadth 17 m. The Director Capt. Janusz Majewsk brought me personally with a small pilot boat to the vessel. He also showed me with that pilot boat a part of the Port of Szczecin ┬áThe pilot trip was very varied and started with a 180 degree turn in the port of Szczecin. After we passed the pilot station we reached the rather shallow lake Zalew Szczecinski and followed the buoys. Through the narrow channel Piastowski we sailed via Swinoujscie to the Baltic sea. With the pilot tender we were brought to the pilot station in Swinoujscie. For more pictures see Pilots of Szczecin

Nissan eco-friendly ship in Port of Tyne.

Via Facebook I recently received a message from Marine Insight about a new car carrier ‘The City of Petersburg’. The special design is so made that it reduces the waste and cuts the air resistance by almost 50 percent. The ship has been built with a special purpose of transporting the company’s ecp-friendly leaf electric vehicles. This unconventional eco-friendly ship can accomodate 2000 cars and weighs 21.000 tons. During my visit at Port of Tyne it was possible to accompany a pilot on the car carrier’ The City of Rotterdam’. The pilot however advised me to choose a different ship because the bridge was like a cockpit with only water around. See for more information Marine Insight.

Pilots at Port of Tyne (2)

Because of the good and clear weather, low wind and sometimes beautiful sunlight, I got the opportunity to sail with the pilots at Port of Tyne. This time wth Pilot 14, Mark Reynolds, and a large bulk carrier the ‘Golden Bull’ length 225 m and breadth 34 m and also tree tugs were used. It was an incoming vessel, so we went wth the pilot tender outwards, through the pilot ladder on board. The pilot used tugs for berthing. See for pictures Pilots at Port of Tyne (2)
